Jay Landers was born in Los Angeles on 28th March 1956. After forming a rock band in High School he started working for his father, Hal Landers, who was a record company executive and publisher, as a song plugger.
Jay then
started working as a music publisher for the Entertainment Company, which was
the company that provided the music for "Fame" in it's first few
seasons. Jay has said the in house music producer would call him and explain
the scene where the song was needed and he would search for an appropriate
song.
He was also
involved with the Kids From Fame Tours, organising everything on behalf of the
Entertainment Company.
On working
on Fame Jay jas said: "‘I was a publisher, road manager, tech guy, and
gofer. Working on Fame was like Donald Trump’s The Apprentice come to
life! I think star Debbie Allen fired me
about 5 times!’ "
During his
career in the Entertainment business he's had many job titles including A&R
executive, music producer, record producer and songwriter and has been
nominated for over 30 Grammy, Emmy and Academy Awards for his work in those
roles.
Over the
years he has worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, Neil
Diamond, Josh Groban and has worked with Barbra Streisand for over 30 years as
an executive of 31 of her albums.
