Fame on the Smash Hits Readers Poll 1982
"Smash Hits" was a British pop magazine, that was essential reading for us Kids back in the 80s. Each year they ran a poll where readers voted for their favourites in various categories. Bearing in mind it was a pop magazine rather than focussing on TV stars, The 1982 poll featured Fame in a number of categories:
"Fame" was voted as the 2nd Best TV programme, only beated by "Top of The Pops".
"The Kids From Fame" Album was voted the 2nd best album of 1982.
"Fame" by Irene Cara was voted the 17th Best Single of 1982 , whilst it was also voted as the 9th most annoying song of the year!
"Starmaker" was voted as the 18th Best Single of the year.
The Kids from Fame were voted as the 15th most promising new pop act of the year, despite the fact that they were actors rather than a pop band.
Irene Cara was voted as the 15th Best Female vocalist and Valerie Landsburg was voted as the 20th Best Female vocalist.
Valerie was also voted as the 17th most fanciable Female Human Being!
A year later at the end of 1983 when the next readers poll took place, Fame Mania was well and truly over in the U.K. and the show didn't feature in the top 20 for any category. It couldn't even make the top 20 Tv programmes!
