A Message from Nia Peeples

"Love & Debt" which is directed by Valerie Landsburg is now streaming on Peacock in the U.S.

I recently saw this post where fans of another TV series, that had originally included a lot of music were informed of the situation regarding DVD/Bluray and Streaming of that TV Series.

So to be clear this reply is not specifically about “Fame” but the issues of getting "Fame" released on DVD or shown via streaming service seem to be very similar.

“The subject about streaming in 2024 has been brought up recently, so I thought I’d reach out and get an update. I did just that and thought I’d share what I know.”

Short version: The problem with DVD and streaming is and will always be music clearance.

Long version: Collecting music clearances is a slow battle to check off more and more boxes, filling in more and more gaps. Every piece of music has to be cleared by every moving part of each song.

Often, the problems come from dealing with the individual publishing houses, which can drive much harder bargains, because there are so many more to deal with. By and large, the actual rights to the recordings will be held by one of the four major record companies, while there are hundreds upon hundreds of individual publishing houses.

In some cases, they're small publishers where they only control a few things and in those cases, the publishers will often drive harder bargains that can drive up the price of not just the songs they control, but the songs controlled by larger publishing houses as well.

So a  company has a handful of options. It can try to excise the music entirely.

If the problem is on the recording end, rather than the publishing end, it can try to find a cover version or it can try to find a song that has the same mood or vibe. Or it can fill with original score.

As the show was shot on film, that means audio track and video are all in one.

Producers didn’t realize that one day people would want to own the show on dvd or watch via streaming. So their music rights cover original broadcast, reruns and syndication packages.

Also, Steaming providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, MAX, Shout! etc. used to grab any series they could when they were launching. Now, in 2024, their focus is more on NEW and ORIGINAL content.”

So for a show like “Fame” that was also recorded on film and has a lot of music that is story driven it is very hard for them to edit / replace or remove music. Try to imagine the episode “A Special Place” had they not been able to get the rights for “Starmaker” they couldn’t just remove the song and certainly couldn't just replace it.

In the early years much of the music was provided and published by the Entertainment Company but in later years in an attempt to diversify there was no sole provider of the music.

The options available all cost money and with limited sales potential of a series from over 40 years ago, potentially it would cost more to secure the music rights or edit the episodes than a company would make in sales. So sadly it seems a release would not be viable.

Have a great Pride Month,

Mark.
