Passing Grade was originally titled "Those Who Can Teach". This original story outline comes from August 1981 as writers and producers put together ideas for the first few episodes. The story features Garcy instead of Danny, Rhonda is still included as is Mr Shorofsky's assistant. The main plot of Lydia and Coco auditioning for the same part is similar but in the original Coco gets a part, not the lead. We also have a story line between Bruno and Shorofsky that is not in the episode, which seems to be a continuation of scenes from the pilot. The Doris' missing diary story line was also dropped.
