Beginnings Script Extended and Deleted Scenes - Trivia of the Week

Despite the script being the Revised Final Draft there are a number of changes that were made before filming. Firstly the character of Susan is called Simon Jr in the script. Then the Character of Stephanie Harrison was originally called Gayle Hereford, this was then changed to Stephanie Hereford.

It's strange because the script lapses a couple of times and refers to Stephanie as Gayle. One page mentions her by both names on 2 different lines.

The opening dialogue between Danny and Doris is different to the episode. Comparing the original script to the revised script and then the episode they went through a number of options for the plays Danny and Doris had to choose from.

Original Script:

 Revised Final draft:

The scene where Bruno asks Mrs Berg where Mr Shorofsky is, is longer in the script and in the original it is Julie Bruno asks not Mrs Berg.

The scene in the teachers lounge where Ann asks Lydia to talk to Stephanie is also extended.

And in the same scene there is a couple of lines of dialogue between Lydia and Sherwood that is edited out of the episode where Lydia says Shorofsky should do what she does with her paperwork.

There is a whole scene in the Park with Leroy and Stephanie that is edited from the episode.

When Ann reads out the dancers names who have been selected for the show, they are different in the script. In the episode they have gone with the dancers real names or  variations of them.

The scene where Lydia catches Danny selling Susan and elevator ticket is extended.

"You gotta be your own hero.
You gotta have something worth fighting for.
Go out and find your own dream now. Oh, now.
'Cause you only get one shot now, baby.
You better make it hot now, baby.
 Give it what you got.

You gotta be your own hero (Be your own hero)
Be your own hero (Gotta be your own hero).
Be your own hero.

Wishing on a rainbow at my feet.
It's a lucky sign.
Ain't nothing but the oil slick in the street,
After the rain.
But I, I feel A rush of inspiration in my heart.
It's real, Gonna ride this new sensation.
Tonight I'm opening and starring In my life.
You gotta be your own hero.
You gotta be your own hero.

Innocence in white chiffon.
You can't save it once it's gone.
Still the beat goes on.
As we watch our legends dying.
Toy soldiers in a storm.
Falling one by one.
So Drink a toast to Jimmy Dean And the queen of Sigma Chi.

You gotta be your own hero (Gotta be your own hero)
Be your own hero (Gotta be your own hero)
Be your own hero.

Light a candle for the believers,
Still reaching for the sky (Reaching for the sky).
The future's in their eyes.
You gotta be your own hero
(La La, la, la La, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la)
You gotta be your own hero
(La La, la, la La, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la)

You gotta be your own hero (La)
Look into their eyes (La, la, la)
You gotta be (La, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la)
You gotta be your own hero (La)
Light a candle for the believers (La, la, la)
You gotta be (La, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la)
You gotta be your own hero (La, la, la, la)

Mrs Gertrude Berg - Character of the Month

Mrs Gertrude Berg has been working as a secretary in the school office for years. The lovable and ditzy lady maybe forgetful at times and might get a little confused but she has her finger on the pulse and keeps the office running pretty smoothly.

She is kind and caring and always ready to help others out. She loves nothing more than hearing the gossip of what everyone is up to and working in the office is the perfect place for her to get all the information she needs on the teachers and students.

Mrs Berg is always fighting to get a raise and has a volatile relationship with Vice Principal Quentin Morloch.

In "Lisa's Song" we discover that Mrs Berg is a Medium and she uses her skills to try to communicate with a ghost in the school. In "The Incident" she also tries to communicate with student Jesse Velasquez, who was in a comma at the time.

We learn in "Alice Doesn't Work Here Anymore" that 40 years ago in her her younger days Mrs Berg  was also an actress named Alice Bowmont, who made a couple for films but she chose a different path and got married, had children and now has grand children. However over that time she shared letters with her old flame and director of some of her films telling him that she was Principal of the School of the Arts.

Jack Wilson - Make Up Artist - Crew Member of the Week

Jack Wilson - Make Up Artist

Jack Wilson was a tall, lean man with ginger hair, glasses and a beard and he was a veteran Make Up artist when he started working on Fame in 1981, with over 40 years worth of experience in the Make Up field.

He had first gone to work for MGM in 1945 and had worked on projects like: "Gigi", "The Fugitive" and "The Invaders".

Jack worked on 85 episodes of "Fame" as the sole Make Up artist covering all of Seasons, 1 to 3 and then on selected episodes in Seasons 4 and 5.

He was nominated for an Emmy in 1983 for the Outstanding Achievement in Make Up Award for the Episode "Not In Kansas Anymore".

Carol Mayo Jenkins remembers Jack as being "Just Divine".   She stated in 2019 at the Fame U.K. Reunion Q&A:

"One time, I had a very big scene, that I was getting ready to do in the very beginning. Right before he came and put powder on my face and I knocked his hand away because I was concentrating on what I had to do.

I filmed the scene, it was over. I went back to the trailer. Jack came back to my trailer and said, 'Now Listen, I have to explain to you. If your nose is shiny, they're not going to yell at you, they're going to yell at me. It's my job to make you look good and you have to figure out a way to let me do that!' It Such a good lesson. A wonderful lesson to learn".

When interviewed in 1983 Jack said:

"On most shows there are two make up people.. But on Fame only has one. It makes for a nice homely atmosphere. They're a great bunch to work with. I feel like they're all my kids!"

After Fame continued working as a Make Up Artist in TV and Film, most notably on "The Twilight Zone", "Father Dowling Investigates", "Beauty and The Beast" and "In The Heat Of The Night".

After 2 seasons on "In The Heat Of The Night", Jack decided to retire in 1992.
