New York Times 14th October 1982 MIXED RATINGS FOR NBC

MIXED RATINGS FOR NBC

By Tony Schwartz Published Oct. 14, 1982

THE bad news at NBC is that despite high hopes and a rare measure of critical acclaim for its new prime-time shows, the network ran a distant third for a second consecutive week to ABC and CBS in the national prime-time ratings.

But the good news for NBC is that nearly all its shows are attracting far bigger audiences in major cities than they are nationally - most especially its comedies. Last week, the network finished first in the prime-time ratings in New York City and Chicago and second in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

NBC's urban numbers are notable, most particularly in New York City. ''Fame,'' for example, which is attracting only 22 per cent of the viewing audience nationally - a number that spells failure - has gotten a healthy 30 share here. Other examples including ''Silver Spoons,'' which has a 26 share nationally and a 33 locally; ''Hill Street Blues,'' 31 nationally and 37 locally; and ''The Powers of Matthew Star,'' a 22 nationally and a 29 locally; and ''Cheers,'' - perhaps the most praised new show of the season - a 19 nationally, and a 24 locally. A 26 or 27 share is considered the minimum necessary for survival.

NBC's urban strength, should it hold, has two possible opportunities. The first is financial - certain advertisers pay a premium for young, urban audiences. The second is competitive - ABC, with its longstanding emphasis on comedy, has long had a lock on those viewers.

New York Times Article on Fame becoming a TV series 1982

TV: 'FAME' BEGINS AS WEEKLY SERIES

7th January 1982 By John J. O'Connor

ROLLING off the success of the movie, ''Fame'' comes to television tonight, at 8 on NBC, as a weekly series. The central setting is the New York High School for Performing Arts, w he re talented city youngsters prepare furiously for what they hope will be sparkling careers in the theater, movies, television, dance or music. The types of students and teachers are straight out of central casting.

The premiere episode, written by Christopher Gore and directed by Bob Kelljan, takes place on the first day of the fall term. Julie (Lori Singer), a cellist, has just arrived from the Midwest with her newly divorced mother and is nervous about her new environment. She keeps doing and saying the wrong things, leaving most of the other students suspicious or, at best, distant.

Julie quickly learns that New York is not Grand Rapids. As one student puts it: ''You are in the hot burning center of the galaxy. In this school, you gotta be tough, you gotta work hard or quit.'' This kind of line is nearly always a cue for another chorus of the title song and the spirited youthful cry of ''I'm gonna live forever!''

''Fame'' is not, obviously, naturalistic drama. It is several notches above the sit-com silliness of a ''Welcome Back, Kotter.'' But it is remarkably close to the glossy unreality of a ''Grease.'' Certain conventions must be accepted. In the school cafeteria, for instance, a rock band seems always to be on duty, waiting for one of the students to burst into song as everybody else begins dancing energetically. The dance classes, overseen by Debbie Allen as the teacher Lydia, are as slick as a road company of ''A Chorus Line.'' Miss Allen is also the choreographer for the series.

Not having seen the original film, I cannot comment on whether the television series represents an improvement or an erosion. On its own, strictly within the overall television context, it is an attractive project, loaded with young talent and energy.

These performers are going to win you over even if it exhausts them. Coming out of the movie, and not getting any younger, are Lee Curreri as Br uno, the composer, and Gene Anthony Ray as Leroy, the dancer who ca n't bring himself to wear tights in class. The role of Coco, the dyn amic pop singer, is now being played by Erica Gimpel, who happens t o be gorgeous as well as talented. Others outstanding in the cast i nclude Carlo Imperato, Valerie Landsburg, P.R. Paul, Tommy Aguilar , Judy Farrell and Albert Hague.

''Fame'' gets off to a disarmingly sassy start, striking a reasonable balance between youthful realities and show-business pizazz. The rest will depend on good scripts and maintaining the momentum.

Fame News October 2024

In October Kids From Fame Media posts will be Celebrating:

Episode of the Month: "Lisa's Song" from Season 3

Magazine of the Month:  The New York Times

With more solo music from the Fame Cast

Back in February Valerie Landsburg was interviewed for the Order Up podcast.

Last Month the world lost James Earl Jones.  A number of Fame cast members paid tribute to him. Debbie Allen said:

"Today we lost our Big Daddy. #JamesEarlJones
will forever be remembered as The GOAT. It was truly a privilege to direct him and a Blessing to be loved by him. We will forever speak his name and tell the great stories that will become Legend and Myth and seed generations to come. ❤️🥲❤️🙏🏼🥲❤️🙏🏼"

Debbie also spoke to Entertainment tonight

Michael Cerveris said:

"One of my earliest tv appearances was in a short lived series, Gabriel’s Fire, starring this legend. I confess I spent much of my minimal scene with him staring at his mouth, transfixed as “That Voice” emanated from it. He was so kind, encouraging and generous to this utterly green kid and it only made me revere him more. Learning this sad news at rehearsal in the theater district feels like a gift and a guide to honor every moment of this work, as this great man seemed to, always."

Erica Gimpel said:

"Time stops
A great artist has passed
Mr. James Earl Jones

It was my great honor to play his daughter in the Christmas movie Santa & Pete. I will cherish that moment in time for the rest of my life.

Rest well Dear Sir, Mr. James Earl Jones. You were a giant, a trailblazer, a genuine artist. Thank you for all the great films you have left for us to savor, cherish and treasure. Thank you for the memory of seeing you on Broadway in August Wilson’s Fences, and then in the Gin Game with Cicely Tyson. Thank you for all you have given us.

I send my love to your family and close friends as they walk through this time.
Peace,
Erica💜🙏🏽🕊️""

Michael Cerveris' band Loose Cattle have released a new single titled "Joanne" which comes from their new album "Someone's Monster" which is due out on November 1st.

Lee Curreri recently posted about his experience composing the song "Everyone's A Winner" for the 1983 Yummy Awards.

Lee said:

"When NBC asked me to come up with a song for the Saturday Morning cartoon lineup, I did a demo in my little bedroom studio with an Emulator 1, a Linn Drum, a Rhodes, and an OBx-a synth. The day after I submitted the demo, I heard a knock on my dressing room door - it was my arranger idol, Peter Matz (the bandleader for the Carol Burnett Show). Some kids idolized athletes, I idolized bandleaders 😃 Peter was working on the charts for the song. He invited me to the recording session with the orchestra. I was in seventh heaven - I got to hear an orchestra perform what I had recorded, overdubbing with my Emulator on a Tascam 4-track - with Peter Matz conducting!"

Olivia Barash will be a guest at Fan Fusion Convention at double tree near the Hilton Hotel, Collinsville Illinois. The event takes place 22nd to 24th November 2024.

Grey's Anatomy returned for season 21 on 26th September with the trailer showing Debbie Allen's character Catherine Fox receiving a slap from Bailey!

Debbie is also an Executive Producer on the new documentary "King of Kings". Here she is interviewed briefly about it.

Have a great month,

Mark
