Rest In Peace To Joanna Merlin who died last month. Joanna played the dance Teacher in the 1980 Fame Movie.

Lee Curreri took time to pay tribute and said:

"One day Joanna Merlin (who I met while filming the movie Fame), asked me if I would participate in a table read of a new musical that was about to happen the next day. I reported to the Broadway theater stage where there were chairs set up around a long table next to an upright piano. At the piano sat Stephen Sondheim, at the table was Hal Prince, and the musical was an early version of Merrily We Roll Along. I played the part of a sarcastic pianist (I know, a real stretch). Sondheim played...and sang his score. I thought I died and went to heaven. The part I read for was re-written and consolidated into another character. While the musical was being revised, the brilliant actors that were already cast in the play were on hold, which also meant they were temporarily unemployed. Joanna got them work as background talent in the Fame TV pilot, so I got to see them all again on the Haaren High School set. We also ended up doing an afterschool special together - Joanna played Trini Alvarado's mom, and I played Trini's manager/friend. Joanna played multitudes of roles in TV and films, and she portrayed practically every ethnic group. We will miss her. RIP Joanna Merlin."
