Hi Fidelity Song of the Month

"Hi Fidelity" is a fun pop song written by Enid Levine in 1981. Enid would then record it on her solo album "American Love" in 1983.

In "Fame" it appears  in the Season 1 episode "The Sell Out", when Bruno goes to the music store to buy a new synthesizer. Sung by Valerie Landsburg with backing from Lee Curreri and Carlo Imperato.

It was chosen by RCA to be released as the first Kids from Fame Single, whilst in America it went pretty much unnoticed in the U.K. and other parts of the World it was a smash hit, reaching Number 5 on the U.K. charts. It also featured on the huge selling Kids From Fame album. The recorded version is slightly different to the episode version.

When the cast toured in 1982 and 1983 Valerie wasn't part of the U.K. shows and Debbie Allen performed a version of the song in the concerts and that version was included on The Kids From Fame Live Album.

Naturally it was also included on the compilation albums "Best of Fame" and "Ultimate Fame". It was also one of the 4 songs included on the 1983 Flip Hits Cassette release.

As years went by Valerie Landsburg the song in it's original format didn't fit with a woman of her age. For her 2001 "Grown Up" album she had Lee Curreri adapt the song into a new version so it was less bouncy. She performed the song on the U.K. day time TV show "Good Morning" in 2004.

At the initial Fame Reunions Valerie avoided performing the song and really had to be talked into it.  The first performance was at the 2017 L.A. Reunion and it was repeated in Italy later that year.

In 2019 in Liverpool Reunion shows Valerie wore a special dress, with comic strip style drawings taken from the the episode performance. This performance was recorded and appears on the Live In Liverpool CD.

In 2022 Valerie wore an 80s style Doris permed wig and bright stripped trousers for her performance which went down a storm.

Valerie told Now 80s that she is now resigned to always having to perform the song at any of the Fame concerts.

The song was also covered by the D Dance School on their Fame covers album and a Instrumental version Released on the Fame Karaoke Album in the 00s.

In 2018 Daphne and Celeste recording a cover version of the song for the B Side of their single "Alarms".

Lyrics:

Other boys may turn me on

But I let temptation slide

Used to be so plain to see

The hunger in my eyes

But now I'm buying (Buying)

Trying (Trying)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-hi-hi)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-hi-hi)

Keeping it light  Keeping us tight Alright

Hi-fidelity

Quadraphonic sound, stereo desire

Coming to you loud and clear

With a brand new fine-tuned radio

And I'm so glad you're here

Someone to lie with (Lie with)

Fly with (Fly with)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-fi-fi)

Hi-fidelity High  (Hi-fidelity)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-fi-fi)

Keeping it light (Keeping it light)

Keeping us tight Alright

Hi-fidelity

Is it real or is it synthesized

Maybe I'm being hypnotized

I need you baby, and my feelings are true

I'm saving my love for you

Now in my dreams and in my heart

On my frequency

I'm the number-one song on your chart

It's where I want to be.

Someone to lie with  (Lie with, lie with)

Fly with, fly with

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-hi-hi)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-fidelity)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-hi-hi)

Keeping it light (Keeping it light)

Keeping us tight,  Alright

Hi-fidelity  High  (Hi-hi-hi)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-fidelity)

Hi-fidelity High (Hi-hi-hi)

Bigger than life (Bigger than life)

Making our night Alright.

Hi-fidelity  (Hi-fidelity Hi-fidelity)
