“Hot Times in the City” is about a young man in NYC who debates the agonizing question of whether to seek revenge on his brother’s murderer and must weigh the effects of his choices on his loved ones and on his life’s trajectory.
This song’s narrative eerily reflects the dark global isolation COVID-19 has subjected us all to.
May we collectively watch over one another and choose the right path towards light, kindness & love.
Hot Times In The City
The City sleeps but I am wide awake
Trying to find the answers as to why my heart aches
Everybody’s getting stoned but I have had enough
I’ve been Napoleon all my life and girl I’m not that tough
I know this town is sucking me dry
And unlike my brother before me I want to get out alive
Driving a truck or opening a door
Can’t be what my maker had in store
When you’re trapped in a union town
They make the money good so you stick around
You get your book when you reach eighteen
And then you shape the hall forever it seems
I’m passing tattered mattress on fire escapes
Steams rising beneath my feet to heaven’s gate
Gotta do one thing before I leave
Prove to everyone I’m the man I’m supposed to be
I’m walking to meet my baby underneath the bridge
I’m gonna take her to a place she’s never been
She’ll walk with me where the losers always win
CHORUS
And it’s hot times in the city tonight
All the fans are broken and the people don’t act right
You’d better watch your back or you may never see daylight
Because it’s hot times in the city tonight
Hot times in the city tonight
Hot times in the city tonight
When I see my girl she’s crying tears of fear
Before I say hello she says “Hand it over here.”
Then she reaches in and pulls the gun out of my jeans
With this piece I should do the right thing
It looks so peculiar laying in her hands
With it she can kill just like any man
Then she grabs my shoulder and looks me straight in the eye
Says “I know you loved him but let the past lie.”
I’ll never forget that night I heard my brother’s scream
I woke up to the sound of police sirens
I threw on some pants and I ran down the stairs
They were pulling a white sheet over his red hair
The city took Bobby’s body away
Only the white chalk and red concrete remain
A cold reminder not to make a sound
Even if you saw what went down
My mind snapped back as the wind hit my face
My girl said “If you’re a man you’ll take me from this place.”
We headed to the train for a cross country run
CHORUS
And it’s hot times in the city tonight
All the fans are broken and the people don’t act right
You’d better watch your back or you may never see daylight
Because it’s hot times in the city tonight
Hot times in the city tonight
Hot times in the city tonight
