Step Up To The Mike - The Kids from Fame - Song of the Month

"Step Up To Mike" is a fun song inspiring people to get up and sing. Written by Alan Gordon in 1977 and recorded  for a single that same year under the name "the One
and Only Extragordonary Band.

In "Fame" it appears  in the Season 1 episode "But Seriously Folks", where the Kids get up on stage at Danny's comedy performance to help show Danny's father that what they are doing is worthwhile. It is sung by Valerie Landburg, Erica Gimpel, Gene Anthony Ray and Carlo Imperato.

It  features on the huge selling Kids From Fame album and was the B side to the "Starmaker" single in 1982.

The album version contains an announcer performed by the song's writer. The episode version does not have the announcer.

When the cast toured in 1983 it was reported that The Waters backing vocalists performed the song although no footage of this was ever released.

The Song has become a staple of all the Fame U.K. Reunions.  In 2019 in Liverpool it featured Loretta Chandler, Nia Peeples, Cynthia Gibb, PR Paul and Jesse Borrego joining Valerie and Carlo join. "

In 2022 the whole cast and backing singers performed on the song at the Reunion concerts.

The 2019 Reunion version is included on the Live In Liverpool CD.

"Everybody Needs A friends It's True,
It Takes Friends In The End To Make The Plan Come Through, And Oh
I Want You To Know, That We'll Stick Together and
We'll Last Forever, Let's Take a Bow.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind.
Step Up To The Mike.

Folks Are Saying That God Is Dead,
That's The Devil Working Inside of Their Heads, and Oh
You Gotta Know, My God Is A Living God,
He's A Walking and Talking and Giving God and Oh
I Want You To Know,
Who Made The Blue Skies,
So As Beautiful Birds Can Fly.
The Night and The Day,
The Thunder and Rain,
Who Taught Us The Truth Inside of His Name.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind.
Step Up To The Mike.

My Friend You're A Lucky Man,
You've Got Friends Who Will Lend You A Helping Hand.
And Oh, I Want You To Know,
We All Need Each Other,
Touch One Another, Right Now.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind.
Step Up To The Mike.

I Know I'm a Lucky Man,
I've Got Friends Who Will Lend Me A Helping Hand
And Oh, I Want You To Know,
As Long As We're Together,
We Got To Last For Ever.
Together We'll Try With All Of Our Mind
The Whole World Is Waiting, Step Up To The Mike.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind.
Step Up To The Mike.
It Doesn't Have To Rhyme.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind.
Step Up To The Mike.
It Doesn't Have To Rhyme.

Step Up To The Mike
And Say What's On Your Mind."
