Trivia of the Week - Exterior Building Location

Interior and Exterior filming for the pilot episode "Metamorphosis" took place at 'Haaren High School' (now know as 'Haaren Hall' as part of the 'John Jay College of Criminal Justice' Campus) located at 899 10th Avenue New York. The school name was changed for the exterior shots. Interior shots were also filmed at this building for the original  FAME movie.

When the series proper went into production, filming of the show transferred to Los Angeles and The Bradbury Building which is located at 304 South Broadway (3rd and Broadway) in downtown Los Angeles was used for exterior shots only.  This building is famous for it's interior having been used in many Hollywood movies and TV shows including Blade Runner. Fame is one of the few productions to use the Exterior.
The font used for the "School of the Arts" sign, is identical to the actual 'Bradbury' sign.

The subway sign isn’t real. It’s just a prop placed on the pavement.

From Season 4 location shooting returned to New York for the first couple of episodes. Julia Richman High School - 67th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue was used widely in Seasons 5 and 6. A  fake street and school frontage were then created on set to try and replicate the building used although the sign used is actually the same sign as used on the Bradbury building.
